Chapter 01
A breaker that keeps tripping is telling you something
A single trip after you plug in a space heater is usually nothing. A breaker that trips repeatedly, trips with nothing new plugged in, or won't reset at all is a different problem, and in a lot of the older St. Johns and North Portland homes we work on it traces back to a fuse box or panel that was never sized for how the house is actually used now. We diagnose the circuit, not just the breaker, before touching anything.
The same goes for a panel that feels warm to the touch or hums, or a breaker that resets but trips again within minutes. Those are the calls we tell homeowners not to sit on.

Dead or warm outlets, and switches that buzz or do nothing
An outlet that's gone dead, feels warm, or has a scorch mark around the plate is a wiring repair waiting to happen, not just an outlet swap. A switch that buzzes, sparks, or stopped working entirely often has the same root cause further back in the wall. Electrical outlet repair and light switch repair both start the same way here: open it up, check the connection behind it, and only replace what's actually failed.

Intermittent faults are the hardest calls, and the ones worth getting right
Wiring that works fine most of the time and then doesn't, a light that flickers only sometimes, an outlet that's live one day and dead the next, is the category of wiring repair that gets misdiagnosed most often, because the fault isn't present when the electrician shows up. Tracing an intermittent connection through an older home's wiring is exactly the kind of job thirty years in this housing stock has taught us to run down instead of guess at.
