Lighting Installation

LED retrofits, chandeliers, general fixture work and outdoor lighting for Portland homes and businesses through winters that are dark before most people are home from work.

Chapter 01

Why lighting is different here

Improve your space and save energy with our LED lighting installations. We'll help select ideal fixtures and create a lighting system that enhances ambiance while reducing energy costs, benefiting homes and businesses.

Portland winters are dark and wet for months at a stretch, which makes lighting a genuinely different job here than it is somewhere sunnier. A fixture plan that leans on daylight for half the day doesn't hold up when there isn't much daylight to lean on. We plan lighting for the house that's dark by five, not the one in the brochure photo.

LED retrofits and general fixture work

Swapping old fixtures for LED is usually the fastest win in a room, in general terms of lower running cost and less heat off the fixture itself, and it's the work we do most often. Selecting the right fixture matters as much as the swap does; the same room reads completely differently under a warm, diffused fixture than under a bare bright one, and we'll talk through that with you before anything goes up.

General fixture installation covers everything from a straightforward ceiling light to a run of recessed cans, and on an older St. Johns house that comes back to the same question as any other ceiling work: what the existing box is rated to carry.

Chapter 03

Chandeliers, weight and the box behind them

A chandelier is a lighting fixture with a structural question attached to it. The box behind the ceiling plaster in a pre-1950s Portland home was very often sized for a bare bulb, not for a fixture that can weigh considerably more once the arms and the glass are on it. We check what that box is rated for before the chandelier goes up, and where it isn't rated for the weight, we install proper support first so the fixture is actually carried by the framing, not just by four screws into old plaster.

That's the step that gets skipped when a fixture is bought online and hung by whoever's around on a Saturday. It's also the one that decides whether it's still hanging straight five years later.

Outdoor and landscape lighting

Outdoor lighting installation covers entry and porch fixtures, landscape lighting, and anything else that has to stand up to a Portland winter outside rather than a dry ceiling inside. That means weatherproof fixtures and connections rated for the exposure, not indoor fixtures pressed into service outside because they were what was on hand.

Done well, outdoor lighting is also the thing that makes a St. Johns house or storefront visible and welcoming on the long stretch of the year when it's dark well before dinner.
